“An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” This little saying has been embedded in my brain, I feel like, since I could talk. Not until I was much older did I realize the benefits apples really do have. I firmly stand by this mantra: If you are hungry, eat an apple. If you reject the apple, you’re not really hungry. What I mean by that is, I fall guilty to eating out of boredom or when I have the munchies (wink, wink). I started noticing that I would claim to be hungry, so I would force myself to reach for an apple. If I didn’t want the apple, I wasn’t hungry. Get it? Got it? Good.
↑ If baby wants an apple, baby gets a 12 apple centerpiece. No one likes a hangry chick.
Apples are a great grab-n-go snack. They are full of natural sugar so I really dig them in the morning. I found out in 2007 that I am hypo-glycemic. If my blood sugar levels are low when I wake up, an apple helps raise my blood sugar without the acidity that other fruits or juices contain. (Acidic food on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster.)
Apples also raise my energy level and… you know… help with what fiber helps with… in the restroom. Another plus is that they are a healthy snack to aid in weight loss. I’m not a dietician but I know my own body, so when apples help me shed a few pounds I can say that. Foods high in fiber make you feel full without all of the unnecessary calories.
If you need a mid-afternoon pick me up, try to incorporate them in your lunch. Listen, I’m not a huge fruit-in-my-salad kind of girl but they do rock with mixed greens and blue cheese. Give it a whirl.
If I haven’t convinced you enough, Readers Digest Best Health Magazine stated, “In 2004, USDA scientists investigated over 100 foods to measure their antioxidant concentration per serving size. Two apples, ‘Red Delicious and Granny Smith’, ranked 12th and 13th respectively. ”

Next time you go grocery shopping, try a few different types. Pink Lady apples are near and dear to my tastebuds because of their tart flavor.
